TOLLE TAKES 3RD, PETERS GETS 4TH

By William

SALINA – It was a good day for the Smoky Valley girls wrestling team as two of the three participants at the Class 5-4-3-2-1A State Meet found a spot on the podium and the team landed in a four-way tie for 12th in the team standings.

Junior Madi Tolle had the strongest day for the Lady Vikings as she placed third at 191. Tolle won her first match before losing for the first time this season to Holly Colvert of Tonganoxie in her semi-final match.

Tolle than came through the consolation bracket with two strong wins to place third overall and score 16 team points.

Belle Peters, the lone senior among the three Lady Vikings competing, placed fourth and scored 10 team points while having to wrestle three of the top five finishers in her 138 division.

Belle won an easy decision over Audrey Darnell of Baldwin in her first match before running into the buzzsaw called Kammie Schanz of Mulvane in her second match. Belle lost to Schanz by a fall who finished her season unbeaten and crowned state champion.

In her third match of the day, Belle earned a hard-fought, 8-7 decision over Kaliegh Morrison of Atwood who would go on to place fifth, before losing her final match by a fall in a rematch with Darnell of Baldwin.

Sophomore Noelle Peters, wrestling at 109, concluded her season 10-8 as she lost both her matches on Saturday, both by a fall.

For the day, the Lady Vikings totaled 26 team points which tied them for 12th with Buhler, Silver Lake and Mulvane. The Smoky Valley girls missed finishing 11th by one point.

Baldwin took the state title with 54.5 points while Pratt with 49, Paola with 46 and Wellington with 39 rounded out the top four.

While Belle Peters will graduate, both Noelle Peters and Madi Tolle will return next season to once again work for the prize of standing on the podium at the state meet.
