DOERKSEN, HECKEL LEAD INMAN
By William
HUTCHINSON – The Inman boys went on the road to Hutchinson on Monday for their first game of the substate playoffs and were doing well until an offensive stumble in the third quarter gave Hutchinson Trinity all the momentum that they needed to score a final 59-51 defeat of the Teutons.
With the loss the Teutons conclude their 2020-21 season with a 10-11 record.
Inman held a slim, two-point 17-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter thanks to four three-pointers by Jace Doerksen, only to have Trinity even the score up at 28-28 going into the halftime break. In the third quarter, Trinity put up 14 more points while the Teutons could only manage four, giving Trinity a solid 10-point advantage going into the final eight minutes of play where they held on for the final nine-point victory over Inman.
“A bad third quarter tonight did us in,” said Teuton head coach Brett Froese. “We played really, really good for three quarters. I loved how much the kids fought tonight, as they played extremely hard, not only tonight but all season. Trinity’s guard Hammeke was just a little too much for us tonight as we let him drive downhill way too many times in the first half.”
Trinity was led by Kaleb Hammeke who finished with 25 points after putting 15 on the scoreboard in the first half.
For Inman, Jace Doerksen was hot early with his four three-pointers in the first quarter and then finished with 18 points total before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Tanner Heckel chipped in with 12 while Eli Brunk had eight.
For the game the Teutons finished with nine three-pointers made.
Coach Froese concluded his game and season reflections by noting, “We played a super tough schedule this year, but the boys showed up every game and played hard. This was a fun group to coach, and I am thankful for my seniors and everything they accomplished. The group returning, which is a lot, will be motivated next year I have no doubt.”
