KAUFMAN, DURST LEAD MOUNDRIDGE

MOUNDRIDGE – The Moundridge girls took care of cross-county business on Tuesday in their first game of Class 2A substate as they hosted the Inman girls and closed out the evening with a solid 53-38 win.

The Lady Wildcats burst out of the gate and put 20 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter while holding the Lady Teutons to just two points before the visitors chipped away at the lead and Moundridge was left with a 10-point, 27-17, advantage as the teams hit the halftime break.

Moundridge surged ahead again in the third quarter and lead by 20, 41-21, heading into the final eight minutes of play where they held off a small Inman rally to earn the final 15-point victory.

Now 16-5 on the season, the Lady Wildcats will now play Salina Sacred Heart on Friday, March 5 in the next round of substate as Sacred Heart defeated Hutchinson Trinity Catholic 48-35 in their first-round game and will enter the contest 11-7 on the season.

“The Lady Wildcats started out hot against Inman in the first round of sub-state,” noted Moundridge head coach Vicky Kessler. “Then, the Lady Teutons came charging back to make it just a 10-point game at halftime. Coach Maurer inspired his team in the second quarter and they fought back. It is hard to play a team three times, especially a league rival like Inman.”

While the Lady Teutons did a solid job of keeping Moundridge’s Kate Eichelberger bottled up on the inside, it did open up opportunities for Kourtney Kaufman, Emily Durst, Erin Durst and Kindall Elmore to drive or get some open shots.

One reason why Kourtney Kaufman led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16 while Erin Durst finished with 15 and Emily Durst chipped in with 10.

Kaufman and Eichelberger shared the team lead in rebounds with seven while Eichelberger blocked a whopping six shots by the Lady Teutons.

Coach Kessler concluded her reflections on the substate contest by adding, “This was not a pretty game by any means, but it was a win. I told the girls that the road to a championship is a battle, and it doesn’t matter what it looks like. They responded at halftime by coming out and giving us a 20-point cushion by the end of the third quarter.”
