BEAT HARTFORD 62-32

By William

ELYRIA – It was a total team effort for the Elyria boys on Friday at home as they had 11 players score during their 62-32 drubbing of Hartford.

With the win, the Eagles are now 12-7 for the season and will play in the substate finals on Saturday against Central Plains who defeated Peabody/Burns 51-47 in overtime on Friday. The winner will advance to the state Class 1A Division II state tournament.

“The first game of substate is about getting the nerves out and I felt we were a little nervous to start the game,” explained Eagle head coach Zach Goodrich. “It was our first action eight days so I was not sure how we would come out. We hurried in the first quarter and our defense was not as sharp, but the second quarter and the rest of the game we were more of ourselves and I was proud of the way they responded.”

Elyria held a seven-point, 16-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter before putting 23 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to take a commanding 22-point, 39-17 lead into the halftime break. After putting another 17 points in the scorebook in the third quarter the Eagles cruised in for the final 30-point victory.

The stat sheet was impressive for the Eagles as they dished 14 assists on 21 made field goals, out rebounded Hartford 38-27, and made all but one free throw, going 16-of-17 from the charity stripe for the game.

Coach Goodrich continued his post-game reflections by adding, “Offensively, the boys were able to find the openings against Hartford’s box and one. Zach (Stucky) did a good job of attacking from the high post with the pass and dribble. We knew we would see more zone defense this coming week, so we started focusing on cuts to open space. Bret (Anderson) and Keyan (Wiggers) did a great job finding each other and finishing around the basket as they were a combined 6-of-8 from the field.

Eleven Eagles put points in the scorebook with Zach Stucky leading the way with 12 while Keyan Wiggers and Ben Unruh each scored eight and both Josef Hobson and Bret Anderson chipped in with seven points each. Wiggers just missed a double-double as he led the team in rebounds with nine while Bret Anderson pulled down six and Unruh grabbed five.

Praising his team’s effort, Goodrich concluded his reflections by saying, “I was proud of the boys’ effort tonight as we were doing things that we practiced all season and hopefully we can put together one more solid outing before we think of anything else. We will play a tough Central Plains team that has grit and solid shooting. This whole season has been about challenges and this is one more that we hope our tough regular season schedule has prepared us for.”
