The Moundridge girls played very solid defense Friday to win convincingly, 53-31, over Salina Sacred Heart to advance to the Class 2A substate finals.

With the win the Lady Wildcats are now 16-5 for the season and will tangle with Hillsboro on Saturday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m. Hillsboro is the top seed of the substate and currently holds an 18-3 record for the season after beating Sedgwick on Friday, 58-34.

For the Lady Wildcats, they jumped out to a solid 13-point, 19-6 advantage by the end of the first quarter before taking a 10-point, 28-18 lead into the halftime break. After the intermission, Moundridge out scored Sacred Heart 25-13 to earn the final 22-point victory.

“I was extremely proud of our defensive effort and rebounding tonight,” pointed out Lady Wildcat head coach Vicky Kessler. “Sacred Heart is known for getting two or three shots on many of their possessions, so it was important that we blocked out in the paint. They had a big size advantage, and the girls did a fantastic job keeping them to one shot per possession.”

While Erin Durst led the team in scoring with 17, it was Kate Eichelberger who had the monster game overall as she had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds while also blocking four shots. Kourtney Kaufman just missed double digits with nine points while grabbing six rebounds.

Coach Kessler concluded her reflections on the decisive win by adding, “We had a strong defensive performance to come away with a sub-state win against a very physical Sacred Heart team. We had a fantastic first quarter on the offensive end by hitting four three-pointers while finding the open player. Our guards covered a lot of real estate in the 2-3 zone and made it difficult for Sacred Heart to run their offense.”
