BOUGHFMAN RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE

LITTLE RIVER – The 2020-21 season has come to an end for the Little River girls basketball team as they stumbled in the second half of the Class 1A Division I state quarterfinals and suffered a 57-44 loss to Doniphan West.
Doniphan West will now tangle with Norwich in one of the state semifinal matchups while unbeaten Olpe will battle with Jetmore/Hodgeman County in the other.
It was the Lady Redskins in the first quarter as they held a four-point, 15-11 lead and hung on tightly to a two-point, 27-25 advantage when the two teams hit the halftime break. Doniphan West came out in the third quarter and outscored Little River 15-7 to take a six-point lead into the final eight minutes before closing the game out for the final 13-point deficit that the Lady Redskins could not overcome.
Even with the loss the Lady Redskins can hold their head high as they finished the season with a 2-4 record, a mark not many may have expected for a team that had a roster with only four upperclassmen.
“It was a tough loss for us tonight,” noted Lady Redskin Head Coach Brent Clark in his brief post-game reflections. “Doniphan West is an extremely good team, but we still had a great season, a state tournament team. I am enormously proud of our girls.”
Junior Lily Boughfman had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but nearly scored a triple-triple with eight blocked shots. Freshman Alaina Eck also reached double digits with 10 points while freshman Aubrey Olander and junior Amaya Sneath chipped in with nine and eight points each. MeKenzie Renken helped in the paint by pulling down seven rebounds while the Lady Redskins played a true team game with all seven girls who hit the court recorded at least one assist on offense and as a team they put 11 assists in the books on just 17 made shots from the field.
Looking early toward the 2021-22 season, the Lady Redskins will return the entire roster as they had four juniors, four sophomores and eight freshmen listed.
Thinking of next season, Coach Clark concluded his reflections by noting, “We will return everyone next season, so it will be fun to see what we can accomplish.”
