STRUBER, BECKER GAIN GOLD – EAGLE BOYS PLACE 4TH
By William
BENNINGTON – The Canton/Galva track/field team made their 2021 season debut on Friday at the Bennington Invitational and while the Eagle boys placed 4th overall, the Lady Eagles youth and low numbers hampered overall scoring but not their participation.
For the Eagle boys, Tyson Struber and Morgan Becker led the way as Struber scored a 1st place win in the long jump and a 3rd place finish in the 100 meters while Becker scored a 1st place victory in the 3,200 meters.
Both Christian Darrah in the 1,600 meters and Lane McMannis in the 400 meters earned 2nd place medals while all three of the boys relay teams (the 4×100, the 4×400, and the 4×800) each took third.
While the Lady Eagles are a noticeably young group of participants with three freshmen and one sophomore all running at high school level varsity for the first time, the team itself did not garner any points though sophomore Mimi Craig just missed out on points in the shot put and freshman Emily Lance did the same in the 300-meter hurdles.
“As a coach I am so excited to see these kids back out competing,” noted Eagle head coach Tina McMannis. “I am incredibly happy with their performances this early in the season. Now that we have set some opening marks, we can start working on improving at our next meets.”
Coach McMannis concluded her post-meet reflections by complementing the seniors, adding, “Our team’s senior leaders – Sarah Kendall, Conner Koehn, and Tyler Rummel, all really stepped up to help and encourage the younger athletes on our team today.”
Next up for the Canton/Galva track/field team will come on Tuesday, April 6 when they host Hillsboro.
