MCPHERSON – The McPherson softball team opened their 2021 season on Thursday with a pair of games against Andale/Garden Plain and lost both games in the late innings, dropping the first game 12-7 before giving up 12 runs in the top of the extra inning of game two to lose 20-12.

In game one, the Lady Bullpups led 7-5 after five innings before giving up five runs in the sixth and another two in the top of the seventh to lose 12-7 despite having the same number of hits as Andale/Garden Plain did with eight.

Sophia Herrera and Brette Doile worked the mound for McPherson and gave up the 12 runs (including three unearned runs) and eight hits while striking out eight on 170 pitches.

Karter Alvord led the offense by going three-for-four with a double and a stolen base while both Jacie Myers and Sayge Salmans each belted a home run. Olivia Cheatham was the lone other Lady Bullpup with more than one hit, and she had a pair.

For the second game, the Lady Bullpups scored four runs in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead before Andale/Garden Plain tied it up with two runs in the seventh to send the game into an extra inning where McPherson was pounded for 12 runs while only being able to score four to take the final 20-12 loss.

Doile and Herrera once again worked the mound for the Lady Bullpups and combined to throw 181 pitches, give up 17 hits, and 17 earned runs while striking out eight.

Herrera and Cameron Pelzel each went three-for-four while Taylor Casebeer hit for a double as she went three-for-five to lead the McPherson bats.

“I was really proud of our play against powerhouse Andale/Garden Plain,” noted Lady Bullpup head coach Danica Fitzmorris. “After not having played in the COVID season, it was like starting all over again and the nervous excitement was high. We excelled at the plate and after two games we have seven girls hitting .280 and above with (Cameron) Pelzel and (Taylor) Casebeer leading while (Karter) Alvord, (Sophia) Herrera, (Hope) Wehrman, (Jacie) Myers, and (Sayge) Salmans being close behind. We had very steady bats and managed to score 19 runs, but sadly we left 19 runners stranded on base as well and all opportunities were lost.”

Coach Fitzmorris continued her post-game reflections by adding, “Our communication on defense was a plus as well, as we accrued six errors on the night. We had opportunities to win both games as we took the lead in each with the nightcap being a heart breaker as we had two chances to finish but came up short. Our underclassman play from Alvord, Cheatham, and Rinker were very poised, both at the plate and defensively. At one point we had three freshmen on the field, and they walked away with no errors defensively. Herrera pitched well striking out 17 for the night. She was mentally tough on the mound tonight.”

Next up for the Lady Bullpups will be a doubleheader at Manhattan on Tuesday.

Fitzmorris concluded her reflections by saying, “I am excited to push on to our next game at Manhattan next Tuesday. We have great opportunities as a team if we work together as one and keep our eye on our team goals.”
