MCPHERSON – It was a solid way to start the new season for the McPherson boys tennis team as they split the team into to two participating units and the McPherson red team scored a first-place finish in the McPherson Invitational on Tuesday.

The Bullpups red team scored 56 team points to edge out Newton by a single point for the invitational title.

“Today our mental toughness was tested,” noted Bullpup head coach Tyler Brown. “It is never fun to play in windy/chilly conditions, but we handled it very well as a team. With being ranked so high in the preseason polls we needed to come out and win this tournament to live up to the hype and we were able to do just enough to outlast a very good Newton team.”

Jaden Fox scored the lone gold for McPherson as he won the singles title by going 4-0 on the day. The doubles tandem of Brennan Gipson and Conner Glazner took second in doubles as did Ty Kraemer in singles.

“I felt Brennan (Gipson) and Conner (Glazner) did an excellent job in their home opener as seniors by making it to the finals,” continued Coach Brown. “but it was not an easy road having to beat a very good Newton team in the semifinals to make the doubles championship. I also felt like our singles were absolutely huge today finishing first and second for our red team. Both Jaden (Fox) and Ty (Kraemer) finished higher than their seed to start the day. All the time and hard work that Jaden (Fox) has put in during the off season paid off today as he looked like a completely different player compared to his freshman year. Ty (Kraemer) was also excellent in the fact that he was not even seeded and made it to the finals. The doubles duo of Wesely Wurm and Alex Houston held true to their spot on the bracket and did what they needed to help the red team pull off the team championship.”

Coach Brown concluded his reflections by adding, “Others to note were Tyler Bontrager and Ayden Johnson in the fact that they were not seeded and were able to make it to the semifinals in doubles after they opened the day with upsetting both the number five and four seeds before falling to the number one seed of the doubles draw they were in. Others today gained valuable experience to start the season. We have a mix of players from our top six and second six going to Conway Springs on Thursday so it will be exciting to see how they do.”

The Bullpup tennis team will be back on the courts on Thursday, April 1 when they travel to Conway Springs.
