HERRERA THROWS A NO-HITTER IN GAME 1

By William

MANHATTAN – The McPherson softball team went to Manhattan on Tuesday for two games, one with Great Bend and one with Manhattan, and in the process earned their first win of the young season against Great Bend as Sophia Herrera threw a 76-pitch no-hitter in the 3-0 victory before the Lady Bullpups lost the nightcap 11-1 to Manhattan.

In GAME ONE, Herrera was spot on as she was brilliant from the mound by striking out 10 Great Bend batters over seven innings in the process of throwing the no-hitter.

The game was tied 0-0 until the top of the seventh when a hit by Macy Rinker and a pair of walks, plus a passed ball and an error by Great Bend allowed McPherson to put three runs on the board and get the victory.

“Sophia (Herrera) pitched a great game one against Great Bend,” noted Lady Bullpup head coach Danica Fitzmorris. “Our hitting was at a standstill and we struggled to be patient at the plate as their pitching kept us off balance. Our defense was on target with the few balls Herrera allowed to get in play.”

Hope Wehrman led the McPherson offense with two hits and a stolen base.

Beyond the no-hitter, McPherson did not commit a single error in the field during the game with Jacie Myers leading the effort with no errors in ten chances.

Unfortunately, GAME TWO did not go as well for the Lady Bullpups as Manhattan put five runs on the scoreboard in the second inning and then followed that with six more runs over the next three innings to gain the 11-1 win over McPherson.

The Lady Bullpups gave up three unearned runs as they committed three errors in the second game while also giving up eight hits.

Herrera started the second game for McPherson but only made two innings before she was replaced by Brette Doile.

Taylor Casebeer led the Lady Bullpups with a pair of hits and a stolen base.

“We struggled to keep Manhattan from scoring although (Brette) Doile kept their hitters off-balance and forced several pop flies,” explained Coach Fitzmorris. “Our hitting continued to struggle in game two. Knowing it was windy makes that an even loftier task.”

Next up for the Lady Bullpups will be a doubleheader on the road on Thursday, April 1 at Augusta.
