SMOKY VALLEY SCORES 31 RUNS IN 2 GAMES

LINDSBORG – It was a strong offensive showing by the Smoky Valley softball team as they opened their 2021 season at home with a doubleheader sweep, 18-2 and 13-11, over Nickerson on Tuesday.

In GAME ONE, the Lady Vikings put seven runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning before adding another 11 in the third to earn the 18-2 victory.

Abby Hipp got the win on the mound and pitched a complete game while Claire Broxterman was behind the plate.

Madi Tolle was the big hitter on offense with two hits including a home run while scoring three times and recording four runs batted in. Olivia Morgan also had a two hits while scoring twice and getting two runs batted in while Catherine Odell scored three times. Seven girls scored at least twice while five recorded at least two runs batted in.

After spotting Nickerson a 4-1 lead in the top of the third during GAME TWO, the Lady Vikings erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third and then added four more in the fourth, one in the fifth and another three in the sixth to take a commanding 13-5 advantage into the top of the seventh inning when Nickerson gave a valiant effort and scored six times but came up short to give Smoky Valley the win.

Karee Adams went the first six innings on the mound for Smoky Valley and got the win while Abby Hipp finished up in the seventh with Broxterman behind the plate. Hipp earned the save.

Leading the offense in game two was Maliyah Koster with three hits, one of them a double, while also scoring twice and knocking in two runs.

Catherine Odell, Claire Broxterman, and Addie Heitschmidt each had two hits with Broxterman and Heitschmidt each pounding out a double while Heitschmidt also knocked in three runs.

The Lady Vikings return to the diamond on Thursday, April 1 when they host Pratt.
