NOW 6-0 ON SEASON

AUGUSTA – The young McPherson baseball team can now say they are going to be okay as they traveled to Augusta on Thursday and tangled with a veteran Augusta team full of upperclassman and returned home after completing a doubleheader sweep of the Orioles, 8-2, and 14-3.

The wins improve the Bullpups season record to 6-0 as they now have a week off before traveling to Buhler to face the top-ranked team in the state.

It was senior Dylan Rinker leading the Bullpups in GAME ONE as he struck out a dozen Orioles without walking a single batter while throwing 94 pitches to earn the win.

Augusta was only able to get a pair of runs off Rinker, one in the second and another in the third as the Bullpups lead 5-0 after the top of the second inning and never looked back before adding a single run in each of the final three innings to get the final 8-2 win.

“When the Augusta pitcher made a mistake, we made him pay for it,” noted Bullpup head coach Heath Gerstner in his reflections after the game. “We found ways to score early and often which allowed Dylan (Rinker) to settle in and pitch with a lead. The story of the game was Dylan as he arguably had one of his best starts in his career with 12 strikeouts which included at one point striking out eight batters consecutively.”

At the plate the Bullpup of notice as Aiden Hoover as he went 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in while Tytin Goebel went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and both Collin Pearson and Jaron Brown connected on a pair of hits as the Bullpups tapped Augusta pitching for 16 hits to go with seven stolen bases in the game.

In GAME TWO, the Bullpups tagged the Oriole pitchers for another 12 hits which turned into 14 runs in their 14-3 win and sweep of the doubleheader.

After not scoring in the first inning, McPherson put runs on the scoreboard in each of the next five innings, including three in the second, five in the fifth and their final three in the sixth.

Jaytin Gumm knocked in four runs to lead the offense while Tytin Goebel went 3-for-3 in the nightcap giving him a day of 6-for-7 hitting. Both Gumm and Aiden Hoover added a pair of hits as McPherson pounded out six doubles in the game.

Sophomores Hunter Alvord and Jaytin Gumm worked the mound for the Bullpups with Alvord going the first five innings and striking out seven while Gumm worked the final inning.

After the nightcap, coach Gerstner pointed out, “Augusta came out ready to go and was hitting line drives all over the place in the first inning. Aiden (Hoover) made a big-time double play in the bottom of the first to really take the wind out of their potentially having a big inning. Our bats never went to sleep, and we just kept adding runs each inning as (Hunter) Alvord gave us a quality start on the mound. Jaytin (Gumm) came in an slammed the door to secure the run rule in the sixth inning.”

The Bullpups junior varsity brought home a split with Augusta, losing 11-3 in the first game before bouncing back to take a 10-7 victory in the second outing.

Coach Gerstner concluded his reflections by talking about next week, noting, “We travel to Buhler next Thursday to face the #1 ranked Crusaders according to the KABC Coaches rankings. This will be a great match-up and I am excited to see our young group just go and compete one pitch at a time.”
