MOUNDRIDGE – It was a rough way to lose two games at home on Thursday for the Moundridge baseball team as they lost 17-13 in the opener to Remington when they scored four in the final at-bat and then lost again, this time by just one run, 7-6 in game two.

In GAME ONE, the overall team stats were staggering as Remington and Moundridge scored 30 runs, recorded 37 hits which included six doubles, and a pair of triples along with 18 stolen bases as a combined five pitchers for the two teams threw 386 pitches, struck out 22 and walked 17.

It was a wild one as the Wildcats were up 5-0 after three innings before Remington put five on the board in the top of the fourth to tie the game. After Remington poured across six more in the top of the fifth, Moundridge added one run and trailed 11-6.

The Wildcats then scored four in the sixth to pull within one and added two more in the seventh and with Remington putting across two the game was tied at 13-13 before Remington put four more on the board in top of the eighth and then shut out the Wildcats to gain the 17-13 win.

Ty Rains, Logan Churchill, and Corbin Unruh worked the mound for Moundridge and threw 204 pitches, gave up 23 hits, 17 earned runs and walked 10 while striking out 11.

Wyatt Falco had a huge game, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple to knock in four runs and score three of his own. Corbin Unruh, Ty Rains, and Ethan Brandeweide each had a pair of hits as well while Rains swiped four of the teams 12 stolen bases.

The Wildcats got their 13 runs off a total of 14 hits.

While GAME TWO did not have the offensive fireworks, it was still a close game as Remington held off a late rally by Moundridge to earn the 7-6 win and a sweep of the doubleheader.

Remington went up 3-2 in the first and then held a 6-3 lead after three innings before Moundridge nibbled it down another run to just 6-4 after six. After Remington went up 7-4 in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats valiantly tried to come back but fell one run short and lost 7-6.

Ethan Brandeweide and Ty Rains pitched for the Wildcats, throwing a total of 120 pitches and giving up 14 hits, seven earned runs, walking four and striking out five.

Joseph Schrag was the big hitter in game two for Moundridge as he had three hits, including a double while Dawson Stucky and Jon Schlosser each recorded a pair of hits with Schlosser also pounding out a double. Schlosser had three and Stucky had two of the team’s nine stolen bases as well.

“It was two tough losses for us tonight,” noted first-year Wildcat head coach Jason Rains. “We played much better and improved in many areas, but the small mistakes in pressure situations cost us.”

Rains concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “We battled in both games and put ourselves in positions to win but could not close them out. We need to improve pitching accuracy and defense to become the team we have potential to be.”

The Wildcats will now have a week off before returning to the competitive diamond on Friday, April 9 when they will host Ell-Saline.
