MCMANNIS, STRUBER SCORE GOLD FOR CANTON/GALVA

By William

HILLSBORO – Despite the track meet being in Hillsboro, the Canton/Galva Eagles were considered the host team and performed better than their first meet as the Lady Eagles finished tied for fifth while the Eagle boys finished fourth and brought home two gold medals.

For the Eagle boys, Tyson Struber and Lane McMannis recorded first-place finishes in the long jump and 300 hurdles respectively as the team racked up 71 points to finish fourth in the six-team field.

“Our boys had two gold medalists today with junior Tyson Struber in the long jump and freshman Lane McMannis in the 300 hurdles,” noted Eagle head track/field coach Tina McMannis. “Struber added a second-place finish in the 200 meters while McMannis placed third in the 100 meters. Junior Morgan Becker earned third-place in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs while the 4×400 relay team placed second and the 4×100 relay quartet finished third.”

Hillsboro scored team victories in both the boys, with 149 points, and the girls divisions, with 167 points. Moundridge and Marion landed in second and third place in the girls standings while it was reversed in the boys with Marion taking second and Moundridge finishing third.

For the Lady Eagles, Emily Lance in the 1,600 meters and Natalie Street in the 200 meters both took second place while Street took third in the 100 meters and Mimi Craig threw her way to third in the shot put. All three girls are either sophomores or freshman.

Coach McMannis continued her post-meet reflections by adding, “The Lady Eagles made a lot of improvement from their first meet with three girls winning top-three medals as freshman Natalie Street took second in the 200 and third in the 100, freshman Emily Lance placed second in the 1,600 and sophomore Mimi Craig ended up third in the shot put. Freshman Carley Schmidt and senior Aleah Peres added a couple of fourth and fifth place finishes as well. These girls have been putting a lot of work into their events, which shows in the improvements they have made. Mimi Craig’s 32’ 3” shot put is a solid three-foot improvement on her mark from the first meet.”

Concluding her reflections, McMannis noted the quick turn around this week by saying, “The team has just a couple of days to prepare for their next meet on Friday when we travel to the Lyons Invitational where 12 schools will be participating.”
