MCPHERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS BUSY

By William

SALINA – It has been a busy but successful week for the McPherson Middle School boys tennis team as they spent Tuesday at the Salina South Invitational and Thursday at the Salina Lakewood Invitational, bringing home team championships in both.

The Junior Pups scored a 1st place team trophy on Tuesday, out playing five other teams at Salina South.

Three of the four doubles duo competing for the Junior Pups came away with 1st place gold in their division including Bryson Archer and Ethan Ediger at #1 doubles, Palmer Heskett and Owen Neighbors at #2 doubles, and Aaron Winter and Brandon Western at #3 doubles.

Bishop Brown added a 1st place gold at #1 singles as the Junior Pups rolled to the team championship. Each of the other three singles competing finished in the top four of their division.

“I thought the boys placed much better today,” explained Junior Pup head coach Paul Reichenberger. “We did not have nearly as many unforced errors and we served the ball much better today. The boys also did a great job handling the wind. I hope we are able to build on this tournament win and continue our momentum into our next matches.”

On Thursday, the Junior Pups were once again in Salina and once again scored a 1st place team trophy, outdistancing the six-team field at Salina Lakewood.

At Salina Lakewood, the doubles tandems of Bryson Archer and Ethan Elder, plus Palmer Heskett and Owen Neighbors once again prevailed with 1st place gold in the #1 and #2 doubles divisions. The tandem of Aaron Winter and Brandon Western placed second in the #2 doubles behind their teammates.

For the second time this week, Bishop Brown found 1st place gold by winning at #1 singles as well.

Coach Reichenberger voiced his reflections on the Salina Lakewood Invitational by saying, “I was very impressed with how our team came out and played today. Bryson (Archer) and Ethan (Elder) dominated their opponents today with each of them playing their best tennis of the season. Bishop (Brown) was able to beat a great tennis player from Newton in a tiebreaker to win the singles championship. Finally, Palmer (Heskett) and Owen (Neighbors) have developed great chemistry as teammates and were able to take care of business in the #2 doubles bracket. They beat the other McPherson team in the championship which made for a fun final match of the day. Looking ahead, we have a full week of practice next week to improve, get better, and prepare for our future matches.”

The Junior Pups will now have 10-days off before returning to the competitive courts on Monday, April 19 when they travel to Valley Center.
