VIKING BOYS FINISH THIRD
By William
MARION – Despite the competing in some unpleasant weather conditions, the Smoky Valley track/field teams performed like they were near kind of the hill at Marion on Friday as the Lady Vikings dominated the field of 14 teams while the Viking boys did enough to place third out of 12 teams.
“It was weather to merely try your best just to endure,” noted Smoky Valley head track/field coach Jay Myers. “Gale force winds then rain during the last three or four events. Due to the wind, the 300-meter hurdle races were cancelled with no complaints from the coaches or athletes. I will still refuse to complain as we got a chance to compete, and our girls won most of the events on the track as well as a couple in the field.”
For the Lady Vikings, they piled up 141 points to finish first, 27.5 points ahead of second place Chapman. Leon/Bluestem, Southeast of Saline and host Marion rounded out the field of 14 teams participating.
Belle Peters was the star of the meet as she brought home three individual gold by winning the 100-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the long jump, while her sister Breanne Peters earned two individual goals in the 100 and 200 meters plus running a leg on the first-place finishing 4×100 meter relay team. The Peters sister dominated the pole vault with Belle and Breanna finishing first and second while Noelle placed fourth.
Grace Lambert had one individual gold in the 800 meters while also gold being part of the champion 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams. Besides Breanne Peters, joining Lambert on the winning 4×100 relay quartet were Noelle Peters and Abby Rose.
In the winning 4×400 relay, Lambert and Rose were teamed with Ellise and Kajsa Peterson while Kajsa and McKinley Johnson were the other two legs running the 4×800 relay quartet.
For the Viking boys, they were led by the quartet of Tytus Reed, Ryan Heline, Stephen Peterson, and Lukas Apel who teamed up to win both the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays.
Heline and Reed placed second and fourth in the 1,600-meter run while Stephen Peterson finished runner-up in the pole vault.
Coach Myers concluded his post-meet reflections by saying, “We saw strong teams from Chapman, Southeast of Saline, and Leon/Bluestem plus some individuals from schools we do not see very much. It was a good meet and Marion does a solid job running one off. Happy to have the opportunity and proud of our kids for how they handled the adverse conditions. It was a good day to be a Viking!”
The Smoky Valley track/field team now has a week off before hosting a meet at home on Friday, April 16.
