INMAN – Another member of the Inman Teuton baseball program will be pursuing a college career while playing their best sport as Derick Johnson has signed a letter of intent to play baseball in 2021-22 for Hutchinson Community College.

Derick is the son of Eric and Jeri Johnson of Inman and is a senior for the Teuton baseball team while having also starred for both the Teuton football and basketball teams as well.

Derick will be joining current Teuton teammate Landen Snyder at Hutchinson as Snyder signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the Blue Dragons in February.

A varsity starter on the baseball diamond since his freshman season, Derick was honored with Heart of America All-League honors in each of his seasons.

As a sophomore, Derick had a breakout season when he nearly broke the school record for stolen bases while playing in just 16 games. Hitting in the lead-off position he batted .324 with a .500 OBP while scoring 26 runs and stealing 25 bases.

According to Teuton head baseball coach Matt Mikulecky, “Derick not only has great speed, but he is also the most perceptive baserunner that I have ever coached. His athleticism and versatility have been huge for us over his career playing centerfield, first base, and as a left-handed pitcher. In addition to his offensive production, Derick is off to a great start this spring on the mound has he holds a 1.16 ERA with eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.”

Before staring for the Inman Teutons, Derick also was a star performer for the Central Kansas Crushers Youth baseball teams.

Coach Mikulecky concluded his reflections on the value of Derick by adding, “Derick is a hard-working young man and he has a bright future ahead. He has also been a great senior leader to the younger guys this season, working with them on fundamentals and sharing tips. I could not be happier for him earning the opportunity to continue his baseball career at Hutchinson Community College.”
