BRUNK, PEARCY GET 2 GOLDS EACH
HUTCHINSON – Despite playing without much rest, the McPherson/Smoky Valley girls swim team still managed to do enough to finish second on Tuesday at the Hutchinson Invitational, just nine points behind Andover.
The Lady Bullpups/Lady Vikings rolled up 359 team points to Andover’s 368 to finish second while Great Bend’s ‘A’ team and Buhler rounded out the top four teams in the standings. Hutchinson, Great Bend ‘B’ and Rose Hill were the other three teams participating.
“Today was a bit of an off day for our team as we have been swimming meet after meet without very much rest time and it showed today,” noted head coach Abby Bradstreet. “The girls swam a good meet, but they looked and felt tired today. They have been working so hard and I am still immensely proud of how they swam and placed in today’s meet.”
Once again, super freshman Danica Brunk won two individual golds in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke while Marissa Pearcy came home with two golds as well in the 50 and 100 Freestyle. Both Brunk and Pearcy also earned gold medals swimming legs on the winning 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay teams. Also earning gold with the 200-medley relay were Kierstan Trost and Karik Elliott while Trost and Alexis Smith swam the other two legs of the 200-freestyle relay.
The 400 Freestyle Relay team, Alexis Smith in the 100 Butterfly, Kierstan Trost in the 100 Freestyle and Zoey Whorton in the 500 Freestyle all placed second in those events.
Coach Bradstreet concluded her reflections on the meet by adding, “We did have some girls cut time in their events and overall, we placed really well in every single event that we swam. We were barely beaten out by Andover today but that gives us more determination to get back on top at our next meet. We head to Emporia where we will have the chance to compete against some teams that we have not seen yet this season. It will be a fun meet to see how we stack up against some of those teams.”
On Thursday, the Lady Bullpup/Lady Viking swimmers return to the competitive pool at the Emporia Invitational where 15 teams will be competing for points.
