YOUNG LEADS LITTLE RIVER – 8 SB, 5 HITS
LITTLE RIVER – The Little River baseball team held off a late Moundridge rally in game one before running away with game two to sweep a doubleheader with 10-8 and 17-4 wins at home on Thursday.
In GAME ONE, the Redskins put seven runs on the board in the first two innings before Moundridge was able to get a score on the board in the third. After two more runs in the fourth the Redskins held a comfortable 9-1 advantage when the Wildcats put five runs on the board in the fifth and after Little River added a run in the sixth, the Wildcats valiantly made a comeback attempt in the seventh with two more runs before Little River put away the two-run, 10-8 victory.
Jon Schlosser and Anthony Everhart worked the mound for the Wildcats and gave up nine hits, five earned runs and walked five while striking out just three. Moundridge defense was not much help as they committed five errors.
Ty Rains had three hits for Moundridge in the game while Everhart, Wyatt Falco, Schlosser and London Ward each had a pair of hits with Falco, Ward and Ethan Brandeweide each hitting for a double.
“We put ourselves in a position to have a chance to win but just did not make it happen,” noted Wildcat head coach Jason Rains.
For Little River, Keaton Richardson went the first 4.1 innings on the mound before Dalton Mantz and Grant Stephens finished it out as the threesome gave up 11 hits, seven earned runs, five walks and seven strikeouts.
Braden Young, Grant Stephens and Dalton Mantz each had a pair of hits for the Redskins, with Grant Stephens getting a pair of doubles while Young pounded out a triple and stole four bases. Both Young and Graham Stephens scored three times as well.
After Moundridge put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning of GAME TWO, Little River came back and poured 11 runs across home plate in the bottom of the inning and then added two in the third and another four in the fourth on their way to a dominating 17-4 win.
Ty Herzog pitched a full game for the Redskins, giving up just three hits, three earned runs, walked four and struck out two.
The Wildcats used four pitchers trying to slow down the Little River bats with Ethan Brandeweide starting the game before getting relief from Jon Schlosser, Anthony Everhart and Corbin Unruh.
On offense, the Wildcats only managed three hits from Brandeweide, Everhart, and Logan Churchill with Everhart getting a double.
For Little River, Braden Young had three more hits, including a double while swiping four more bases to give him eight stolen bases on the day. Grant Stephens had a pair of hits and knocked in four runs while Graham Stephens had three runs batted in and scored three.
Wildcat head coach Rains concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “This has been a challenging week playing two tough opponents with Inman and Little River. Game two was a different story, our pitchers struggled to find the zone and we failed to make some plays that we should have and you just can not do that against good teams. It was one of those nights where we hit the ball hard, but right at people on many occasions. That is the way this game is, you can do things right and still not have the ball drop your way.”
Moundridge will now close out the season on Friday, May 7, when they play at Marion.
Little River is now 13-3 for the season and will battle with Marion on the road on Tuesday.
