LADY VIKINGS DOMINATE HILLSBORO INVITATIONAL

SMOKY VALLEY TOTALS 9 GOLD MEDALS

HILLSBORO – The Smoky Valley girls track/field team ran away from the 16-team field on Friday at the Hillsboro Invitational with 127 points while bringing home six gold medals while the Viking boys finished fourth and recorded three gold medals.

The 127 points was well ahead of Leon/Bluestem in second with 56 while Larned, Berean Academy and Elyria Christian rounded out the top five teams.

Belle Peters had a huge meet as she won the 100 meters, 100 meter hurdles and the pole vault. Her vault of 13’ 0” was an invitational record.

Gracie Lambert won the 800 meters while also setting a new meet record while the Lady Vikings 4×800 meter relay quartet of McKinley Johnson, Keira Mullen, Abby Rose and Lambert broke the meet record while gaining gold. The Lady Vikings also won the 4×400 meter relay with Rose, Mullen, Lambert and Ellise Peterson.

Beyond the six gold medals, the Smoky Valley girls also placed second in five events, and third in three others.

For the Viking boys, they were lead by Ryan Heline who earned two gold medals by winning both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters while Kort Sjogren took first in the javelin.

As a team, the Viking boys finished fourth with 55 points, just a pair of points ahead of fifth place Hesston. Inman, Berean Academy and Hillsboro took the first three spots in the team standings.

Smoky Valley will be back on the track on Tuesday, May 4 when they travel to Minneapolis.
