3 BULLPUPS NAMED TO LEAGUE ALL-STAR TEAM

By William

MCPHERSON = The McPherson Bullpup Lacrosse team closed out their initial season by hosting the Great Plains Lacrosse League 2021 Championship Tournament on Sunday at McPherson’s own Grant Sports Complex.

In the first game of the day, the Bullpups drew the number one seeded Wichita Knights who had only lost one game all season. While McPherson lost 11-9, the score alone meant they kept the game close enough that final score could have been in favor of either team.

Taking on the Andover Vipers in the second game of the day, the Bullpups once again gave it a valiant attempt but fell short, losing 11-7.

In the tournament’s championship game, the Wichita Knights proved why they were the team to beat this season by taking a 19-6 victory over the Andover Vipers and winning the Great Plains Lacrosse League Tournament Title.

For the season, Wichita ended 7-1, while the Andover Vipers went 3-5, the Lawrence All-City team finished 4-4 and the Bullpups closed out with a 2-6 record.

According to Bullpup head coach Virgil Lyon, “The tournament turned out to be a great weekend. McPherson has become a vastly improved team compared to the beginning of the season. Both games today were still close enough with 1-2 minutes to play that they could have been anybody’s win. By this time next year, we will be on our way to dominating in the region and then from there, we will begin to challenge our Lacrosse friends in the Kansas City area.”

To show the respect the McPherson Lacrosse team is earning, they placed three members of the team on the 2021 Great Plains Lacrosse League All-Star team. Named to the team were:

  • Colin Winter, Attack
  • Simon Lyon, Midfield
  • Tito Mendez, Goalie
