MOUNDRIDGE – After falling short with a 9-8 loss in game one, the Moundridge baseball team bounced back on Tuesday to salvage one game of the home doubleheader with Ell-Saline by jumping out early and gaining an 11-1 victory.

“Tonight, was a story of two different teams showing up to play,” explained Moundridge head coach Jason Rains. “The first game we came out flat, played terrible defense, and were not aggressive enough at the plate. We dug a hole to deep to come back even though we made a great effort. The second game was a different story as from the first inning on we came out focused on defense, had a much better approach at the plate and played our game.”

In GAME ONE, while the Wildcats had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning, Ell-Saline put four runs on the board in the third, one in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to build a commanding 7-1 lead before Moundridge put another two runs on the board in the fifth.

After Ell-Saline put run eight on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, the Wildcats made a valiant comeback attempt by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game going into the seventh where Ell-Saline was able to put one run across and the Wildcats were not, giving the visitors the final 9-8 win.

Ethan Brandeweide started the game on the mound for Moundridge before Ty Rains and Anthony Everhart came on in relief. The three combined to give up six hits on 147 pitches while giving up just six earned runs due to six Wildcat defensive errors, struck out eight and walked nine.

Joseph Schrag had a pair of hits to lead the Wildcats at the plate while Wyatt Falco hit for a double and both Anthony Everhart and Jon Schlosser each stole three bases.

Coach Rains continued his post-game reflections by noting, “We were down a few of our normal starters tonight, so we had guys playing in unfamiliar positions, but at this point in the season it requires a next man up mentality.”

The Wildcats woke up in GAME TWO as they pounded Ell-Saline pitching for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added one in the second and two more in the third to build a commanding 11-0 lead before Ell-Saline broke into the scoring column with just one run in the fourth as Moundridge cruised to the final 11-1 victory.

Jon Schlosser pitched the first 3.2 innings before Wyatt Falco came on in relief as the two threw 91 pitches and gave up just two hits while walking three and striking out six.

At the plate in game two, Falco hit his second double of the day while the Wildcats feasted on the basepaths in steling eight bases with Joseph Schrag leading the way with three. The win came with Moundridge getting just five hits while Ell-Saline walked eight and their defense made three crucial errors.

Concluding his reflections on the game, Coach Rains said, “We have to get better mentally. We must come out every game focused with a plan and an approach. Bottom line is that we were outplayed by Ell-Saline in game one. Hats off to them as they took advantage of our mistakes. On to the next game.”
The Wildcats will finish out he week on Friday with a road trip to Marion.
