SNYDER, JOHNSON COMBINE FOR NO-HITTER
MCPHERSON – With their sectional of the Class 2-1A state regional being moved to McPherson due to weather, the Inman baseball team made the best of it as they swept both games on Monday, beating Belleville/Republic County 11-1 and Little River 8-5, to give the opportunity to play in the regional championship game on Thursday against Ellis.
Inman is now 18-2 on the season while Ellis is 18-0 and will host the regional final.
In GAME ONE, for the Teutons, Landon Snyder and Derick Johnson combined to throw a no-hitter with the two throwing 93 pitches, walking five, giving up an unearned run and striking out eight.
Inman jumped on Belleville/Republic County with two runs in the first and six in the second to build an 8-1 advantage before getting another run in the fourth and two in the fifth to earn the final 10-run, 11-1 victory.
Besides the outstanding work on the mound, Derick Johnson also was the star at the plate for the Teutons as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, five runs batted in and three stolen bases as the team stole a whopping 15 total bases. Brant Mikulecky stole five. Kyler Konrade had a pair of hits including a double as well.
“Landon (Snyder) and Derick (Johnson) combined for a no-hit shutout, what more can I say, explained Teuton head coach Matt Mikulecky. “We hoped that we could get our offense going and limit our pitch counts and fortunately it worked out. We didn’t hit the ball real great, but we were able to make things happen on the base paths.”
The win in the first game meant the Teutons would be playing Little River in the second game of the day, a team which split a doubleheader with Inman at the end of March and came into the game with a strong 16-3 record.
But in GAME TWO, Little River put a run on the board in the top of the second, but Inman followed up with a pair of runs in both the bottom of the second and the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Redskins came back with runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings but the Teutons added another run in the fourth to hold a 5-3 lead before pushing it out to 8-3 with three runs in the fifth. Little River tried to make a comeback with a pair of runs in the seventh, but Inman prevailed with the 8-5 win and a chance to play for the regional championship.
Carson Munoz took the mound for the Teutons for the first six innings and threw 101 pitches while giving up five hits and three runs, walked three and struck out seven before Carter Brown closed out the seventh inning and earned the save.
At the plate, the Teutons were lead by Brown and Derick Johnson who each had a pair of hits with Brown getting both a double and home run with his pair while knocking in three runs and scoring twice while Johnson had a triple and scored twice as well.
Coach Mikulecky continued his post-game reflections by adding, “(Carson) Munoz came up big once again for us as he battled an extremely dangerous Little River lineup for six strong innings. This game felt like a championship game on the field and in the stands. To beat a high caliber team like them we needed to play a clean game and that is exactly what we did. Little River made it tough on us as they hit the ball hard several times, but the guys made some great plays. Carter Brown’s two-run homer in the second inning gave us the lead and I think it also boosted our confidence.”
Mikulecky concluded his reflections by saying, “We also had some guys come up with timely hits and some situational hitting that resulted in a few huge runs in that second game that ended up being the difference in the outcome. So proud of these guys and the season they have put together.”
