BELLE PETERS GETS 3 GOLDS, LAMBERT 1
By William
WICHITA – Coming into Friday and the Class 3A State Track/Field Meet, all the placings pointed at an opportunity for the Smoky Valley girls to have a shot at a state title, but nobody expected them to run away from the entire field and not only WIN THE STATE TITLE, but to do it in dominating fashion.
The Lady Vikings rolled up 85 team points, 42 points ahead of second-place Eureka, and over 50 points ahead of the teams that rounded out the top five.
Much of the success came from senior Belle Peters who closed out her Smoky Valley career by earning three individual gold medals by winning three of the four events she entered and placing third in the other.
Peters scored wins in the 100-meter hurdles, the 200 meters and the pole vault, an event where her sister Breanne finished third. Belle’s third-place finish came in the 100 meters.

Gracie Lambert also scored an individual gold medal when she outran the competition in the 800 meters.
The Smoky Valley girls also won both the 4×400 meter relay with the quartet of Abby Rose, Keira Mullen, Kajsa Peterson and Lambert, as well as the 4×800 meter relay with McKinley Johnson, Mullen, Rose, and Lambert.

Abby Rose came close to another Lady Viking gold when she finished second in the 400 meters.
For the Viking boys, they finished with 12 points and tied for 22nd with Council Grove. Ryan Heline and Kort Sjogren had the best individual finishes with both gaining fifth place in the 3,200 meters and javelin, respectively. Also finishing fifth and earning team points was the Vikings 4×800 meter relay team of Stephen Peterson, Justice Gardner, Tytus Reed, and Heline.
Southeast of Saline won the Class 3A boys title with 84 points while Girard, Perry/Lecompton, Silver Lake and Scott Community rounded out the top five.
