RESTRICTIONS TO WALKING ON ROADWAYS

Traffic Tip Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department.

This Tuesday, June 1, they are discussing the topic of ‘PEDESTRIANS ON HIGHWAYS’.

June is NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH, and our focus this week is on PEDESTRIANS ON HIGHWAYS.

Walking and running are great ways to increase your personal wellness, but there are a few restrictions you should know to increase your personal safety before you get started.

Standard Traffic Ordinance 68 – PEDESTRIANS ON HIGHWAYS states:

  • Where a sidewalk is provided, and its use is feasible it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and/or upon an adjacent roadway.
  • Where a sidewalk is not available, any pedestrian walking along and/or upon a highway shall walk only on a shoulder, as far as practicable from the edge of the roadway.
  • Where neither a sidewalk nor a shoulder is available, any pedestrian walking along and/or upon a highway shall walk as near as possible to an outside edge of the roadway, and, if on a two-way roadway – shall walk only on the left side of the roadway.
  • Except as otherwise provided in this article, any pedestrian upon a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

For your safety, in addition to the requirements of the Standard Traffic Ordinance, we strongly encourage those walking to:

  • Wear bright colored, highly reflective clothing.
  • Walk or run against the flow of traffic if you do either on a roadway.
