CANTON – Despite only having four members running for 2021, the Canton/Galva cross country team looks to make waves in all events including the Class 1A state meet on the running of senior Morgan Becker and Christian Darrah.

For the 17th season the Eagle runners will be led by head coach Lyle Silsby.

What gets coach Silsby excited is the fact that both Becker and Darrah finished in the top-15 at the 2020 Class 1A State Meet, including a 9th place finish by Becker.

The two will carry the load as the Eagles have but one other senior out, and they will be competing for the first time, along with one freshman. Silsby says they also have one young man out for the junior high team.

No girls are listed for cross country in 2021.

MORGAN BECKER = A senior who finished 9th at the state Class 1A meet in 2020.

Coach Silby says, “Morgan has put in a lot of work over the summer and has looked really good the first couple days of practice. I know Morgan was not happy with his finish last year at the state meet and wants to improve on his time and placing this season. He has great mental toughness, a tremendous work ethic, and barring any injury, I know he can accomplish that goal.”

CHRISTIAN DARRAH = A senior who finished 15th at the state Class 1A meet in 2020.

Coach Silsby says, “Christian has also put in the work this summer, and like Morgan, has looked really good so far during practices. Christian also wants to improve at the state meet this fall and with him and Morgan training together daily, again barring any injuries, he too can improve greatly from what he did last season.”

ETHAN ALKIRE = A senior who is running cross country for the first time competively.

Coach Silsby says, “Ethan has been running over the summer and hopes to improve as much as he can over the course of the season.”

GARRETT SILSBY = A freshman who ran as an 8th grader in 2020.

Coach Silsby says, “Garrett ran cross country last season as an eighth grader but will now step up to high school level competition. He has put a lot of miles running over the summer, and like Ethan, wants to see how much he can improve over the course of the season.

CANE KRASE = A 7th grader who will be competing for the first time in cross country.
