BUHLER – The McPherson High girls junior varsity tennis team got the 2021 season kicked off with a major win at Buhler on Tuesday as they swept three of the four divisions.

With the high heat of the day, the tournament format was switched to bracket and race to six with no-ad, no tiebreaker.

Kyndall Sandbo brought home the first win of the day by going 3-0 in #1 Singles while Taiya Young finished second in #2 Singles after losing a heartbreaking final match of the event.

“Kyndall (Sandbo) and Taiya (Young) were warriors out on the singles court,” explained junior varsity coach Ricardo Sanchez. “They both went up against players that were very consistent and extended points. We were able to solve that puzzle most of the time and find ways to win points. Kyndall found a way to win, even when she couldn’t hit her regular shots and as the season progresses, I am sure she will find ways to play her game with more confidence. Taiya had a great match in her finals. She was down 0-4 and made a come back to tie it at 5-5, deuce. With the change in scoring for the day, that meant it was match point for both players and even though she was not able to get that final point, it was a great learning experience.”

In doubles action, the #1 team of Lakynn Lippelmann and Amethyst Hale took first by going 3-0 while the #2 doubles tandem of Paige Stucky and Lauren Rogers did the same.

According to Coach Sanchez, “The doubles teams progressed very well through the day. I loved seeing Lakynn and Amethyst back on the court as they always have so much positive energy and good communication. Paige and Lauren in #2 doubles started controlling the net more with each passing match and by the time they got to the finals, they were doing a great job of setting their partner up at the net for some great volleys.”

Coach Sanchez concluded his post meet reflections by saying, “This was a great start to the season, and I am excited to see the team get better with each tournament.”

The Lady Bullpup junior varsity tennis team will be back on the court next Tuesday, August 31 for a home meet.
