MCPHERSON – After several seasons of much success, the 2020 McPherson boys soccer team had to rebuild and closed out the season still making the state quarterfinals.

In 2021, replacing two seniors but returning 11 players with a huge amount of varsity experience, Bullpup head coach Chris Adrian is expecting the chemistry to come together and the team to hopefully knock on the door of the state championship once again.

Here is a full 2021 preview of the McPherson Bullpup boys soccer team:

THIS IS THE COACH:

The Bullpup boys soccer coach is Chris Adrian and he will entering his 12 season as the man in charge.

Coach Adrian led the team to a 10-8 record in 2020 that ended with a loss in the State Regional Finals after they went 15-3-1 in 2019, went unbeaten in league play, and then won regionals before losing in the state quarterfinals.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2021:

Unlike 2020 when they worked to replace eight graduates, the 2021 Bullpups look to refill the shoes of graduates Cody Achilles and Logan Ediger, but return 11 players with quality varsity experience.

Among the returnees are 11 seniors, including Caden Hardgrave and Connor Olson who combined scored 21 goals and recorded 18 assists last season. Add in Wesley Wurm, Josh Everhart and Tyler Bontrager and you get another five goals and three assists returning as well.

“We’ve got a large senior class that gained a ton of experience last season,” explained head coach Chris Adrian. “The squad possesses a lot of depth and has several strong leaders. Last season was a bit of a rebuilding year and we started slowly but the team really hit its stride in the second half of the regular season. I see no reason why this team can’t pick up right where it left off and have a fantastic season. The boys have had a great summer and have put in a lot of work in preparation for this fall.”

Running along side the seniors will be juniors Kayden McVicker, Gavinn Henry, Reid Schuckman and Tito Mendez along with sophomore Roy Rodriguez, all of whom combined to score 10 goals while making eight assists.

If there is a concern expressed by the coaching staff it would be having to replace Achilles scoring ability and they said it has been a challenge this summer in the tournaments they have played in.

While there are some very talented attacking players who are hungry to score, the coaches are confident the goals will come as the chemistry improves.

Coach Adrian concluded his 2021 preseason reflections by noting, “I really am excited about this team. While we graduated two key seniors, we return the majority of the team. The experience gained last season is going to greatly help many of these players. We also have several freshman and sophomores that look like they could break into the first team and improve the squad.”
