MENDEZ, ELDER LOOK TO LEAD BULLPUPS

By William / www.mcpherson-county-ks.com

MCPHERSON – While they graduated the top runners for both the McPherson boys and girls cross country teams, head coach Nikolous Rempe is high on the runners returning and will be looking for much success in 2021.

With a much larger number of runners coming out the Bullpups look to improve over the 2020 season when now graduated Cody Achilles and Courtney Eickbush both medaled at the state meet and the entire Lady Bullpup team qualified to run.

Coach Rempe will gain a huge positive in 2021 as Chloe Clevenger has transferred into McPherson and will be running for the Lady Bullpups. Clevenger’s dad is the new cross-country coach at McPherson College, and she comes into the fall with a medal for finishing fifth in Class 1A last season running for Doniphan West.

THE COACH:

Bullpup Head Coach is Nikolous Rempe, and he is beginning just his second season heading up the high school cross country program.

Coach Rempe will be assisted by Gina Clevenger.

In 2020 the Bullpup boys had Cody Achilles medal when he finished seventh at the State meet while Courtney Eickbush medaled for the Lady Bullpups when she finished 20th. Both Achilles and Eickbush have graduated, but Tito Mendez who ran as an individual at state returns as do the other four members of the Lady Bullpup team that qualified will be retuning.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2021:

Both the Bullpup boys and the Lady Bullpup runners return several members of the 2020 teams, and this includes all but one of the Lady Bullpups that qualified for State and Tito Mendez, who qualified individually for last season’s State Championships.

The big pickup for the 2021 season will be Chloe Clevenger who moved to McPherson this summer. Clevenger medaled when she placed fifth at the Class 1A state meet in 2020 running for Doniphan West and will be a very solid addition to the girl’s squad.

Coach Rempe also notes that there are a couple of upperclassmen who did not compete last fall plus the Bullpups have a large freshman class coming in who will also contend for varsity spots throughout the season.

Overall, Coach Rempe points out that this will be one of the larger cross-country teams that McPherson has had for several years.

Coach Rempe concluded his preseason reflections by saying, “We’ve had the largest turnout during summer running since I have been coaching and I am excited to see how the hard work and mileage pays off throughout the season. With only three seniors combined, both the boys and girls teams will be relatively young, but our goal is still to get both the Bullpup boys and the Lady Bullpups to the State meet as a team.”
