HAWKINSON, REIFF, PENNER LEAD LADY EAGLES

ELYRIA – The Elyria Christian volleyball team opened their 2021 season at home on Tuesday and split a pair of matches with WAHAA and Wichita Central Christian.
In the opening match of the season the Lady Eagles handled WAHAA in straight sets, winning 25-12 and 25-19.
Ryland Hawkinson led Elyria with 10 kills, 7 digs and 7 blocks while Kylee Penner contributed 8 digs and 8 blocks. Kortney Potter also had a strong match recording 11 assists and 5 digs.
It took three sets before Wichita Central Christian took down the Lady Eagles with Elyria getting off to a solid start by nipping the visitors 27-25 in set one before losing the final two sets 14-25 and 16-25.
Once again, Ryland Hawkinson had a solid match in scoring 15 digs, 4 kills and 4 blocks while Macy Reiff recorded an outstanding 21 digs. Others who performed well against Central Christian included Kortney Potter with 18 assists, Kylee Penner had 13 digs, Hannah Froese made 3 blocks, Alexus Swenson had 7 digs and Julia Allen got 12 digs and 4 kills.
In the junior varsity matches, Elyria lost both to WAHAA (15-25, 14-25) and Central Christian (13-25, 22-25).
The Lady Eagles will be back on the court next Tuesday, September 7 when they will host Herington, Rural Vista and Goessel. Elyria will tangle with Herington and Rural Vista while Goessel will battle Herington and Rural Vista.
