HALSTEAD – The Smoky Valley football team went on the road Friday and ran wild while being hampered with turnovers before holding on with a late score and earning a 2021 season opening 20-16 victory over Halstead.

While the Vikings rolled up 361 in total offense on 61 offensive plays, including 330 yards rushing, they were stymied throughout the game with turnovers as they fumbled the ball away 5 times, including one that resulted in a Halstead touchdown.

Smoky Valley scored first with a two-yard bulldoze into the end zone for Kade Blanchat which was followed by a two-point conversion run by Justice Autry to give the Vikings an 8-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.

After Trystan Stambaugh scampered 49 yards for a score in the third quarter to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead, they coughed up the ball inside their own five-yard line and Halstead jumped on the opportunity to score to pull within 14-8 heading into the final quarter of play.

After Halstead went ahead 16-14 in the fourth quarter after driving down inside the five and running it in, the Vikings continued to pound the ball until Stambaugh managed to get his second score of the game from the one. Smoky Valley then held on for the final 20-16 victory.

Blanchat, Stambaugh and Autry each took turns running the ball for the Vikings while Karson Pihl directed the offense at quarterback.

Blanchat finished the game with 115 yards on 16 totes while Stambaugh covered 113 yards on 19 carries and Autry cracked three digits with 101 yards on 15 carries.

Defensively, Smoky Valley held Halstead to 222 yards on 38 plays, led by Blanchat with 4.5 tackles, Haven Lysell-Stewart, and Justin Holt with 4 while Stambaugh recorded 3.5.

With the opening game victory under their belt, the Vikings will look to continue the winning way next Friday, September 10 when they go on the road again – this time to Haven.
