HECOX, PTACEK, EVERHART LEAD MOUNDRIDGE

CHASE COUNTY – Three early game turnovers and giving up a safety cost the Moundridge football team as they fought hard to catch up but were unable to in a 2021 opening game loss Friday, 72-34, on the road at Chase County.

Chase County scored an early safety, then scored twice on offense before closing out the first quarter with a long return of an interception for another score to give them a commanding 24-0 lead over Moundridge.

Through the second and third quarters the two teams counter punched each other with touchdowns, as the Wildcats finally got on the board in the second with a 22 yard pass from Henry Hecox to Ethan Brandeweide. Anthony Everhart scored on a three yard run as well, but the Wildcats were still trailing 48-14 at the halftime break.

While the Wildcats gave up another 24 points in the third quarter, they did score twice on two Hecox passes, one of 25 yards to Joe Schrag and another of 29 yards to Logan Churchill.

Everhart got his second running touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter, but by then the margin was impossible to make up.

Despite the lopsided score, Moundridge actually had more offensive plays, 59-47, less penalties, 5-9, and more time of possession, 24:28 to 23:32. Unfortunately the Wildcats only gained 288 yards in offense to Chase County’s 413, which included 309 on the ground.

Two lost fumbles and an interception were the three early turnovers that Chase County took advantage of and Moundridge was unable to make up for.

As for individual play, freshman Henry Hecox started his first varsity game and managed to complete 8-of-13 for 117 yards and three scores, while Kase Ptacek ran for 113 yards on 27 carries. Logan Churchill led the receivers with 47 yards on three catches while Joe Schrag covered 34 yards on just two receptions.

On defense, Anthony Everhart recorded nine tackles while Garrett Doherty had five-and-a-half and Ptacek had five.

Moundridge will be looking for their first win of 2021 next Friday when they go on the road again for a tough battle at Macksville.
