TESCOTT – The short-handed Inman cross country team made the best of who ran on Monday and opened their 2021 season at the Tescott Invitational by earning two medals in the varsity girls division with Lauren Aden gaining a third-place finish.
“I know as a coach that I look forward to the first meet of the season,” explained Teuton head coach Jay Parsons. “It is a chance to see where everyone is in terms of conditioning and preparation while it also gives the new runners a chance to experience what it takes to run in a competitive race. I wasn’t looking for any particular time and/or place since this is the first meet of the season, therefore, my goal for them was to finish the race and compete the best they can, and everyone did just that.”
Aden, just starting her cross-country career as a senior, ran a phenomenal first race by not only earning a medal but placing third out of 22 runners with a time of 23:26.
After the meet, Aden shared her thoughts about her running in a competitive race by noting, “I am ready to do it again, but just not today.”
The Lady Teutons earned a second medal with senior Hannah Martisko finishing 14th with a run of 27:21. Inman nearly scored medals for all three of their Lady Teuton runners as sophomore Lacie Baxter placed one spot out in 16th with a time of 29:49.
The weather was felt by the runners as Martisko commented after the race that, “It was typical Tescott cross country weather, meaning it was hot and that made it a difficult run.”
Junior Enrica Angileri ran the junior varsity girls 5K for the Lady Teutons and ran a 30:36.
For the Teuton boys, only sophomore Riley Stallings ran varsity and he finished 23rd with a time of 24:37, a time which Coach Parsons noted, “was something Riley could build on as he ran a very good race for being his first time out this season.”
Coach Parsons concluded his post-meet reflections by saying, “Overall, I was pleased with the start of the racing season. I saw some things that if I can communicate to the runners and get them to understand we will become better runners, more consistent and competitive.”
Next up for the Teuton harriers will be the huge Hesston Invitational on Thursday.
