LINDSBORG – It was not easy, but the results came out in favor of the top-ranked Smoky Valley volleyball team on Tuesday as they swept both Hays and number-four ranked Nickerson at home.

In the first match with Hays, the Lady Vikings won in straight sets as they easily scored a 25-12 win in set one before having to hold off the visitors in the second set before winning 28-26.

Playing Nickerson, who came into the match ranked number four in Class 3A, Smoky Valley also scored a straight set win though neither set was won by a margin of more than three points, 25-22, 26-24.

“I am so proud of our girls tonight for battling through some of the lows of the game,” explained Lady Viking head coach Sharlene Ramsey. “We had some undisciplined errors that were costly, but they kept their heads in the game and plowed through it.”

Helping lead the Lady Vikings was Adrian Hazelwood as she was perfect on serves by going 15/15 while both Hope Duncan and Laini Haigh were 15/16 on their serves.

Hazelwood also directed the offense and made 46 assists while also recording 10 digs.

Abby Rose and Hope Duncan led Smoky Valley in digs with 22 and 15 respectively, while Rose scored 18 kills and Duncan made 17 while Madi Tolle had 10.

At the net, Tolle made five blocks of which four were solo while Rose made two solo and two assisted.

Coach Ramsey continued her reflections by saying, “Laini (Haigh) played very well tonight while Aubrey Bolda had several solid attacks when we needed them. It is fun to play a team like Nickerson because we know we will earn every point we get and games like these only make us better.”

Concluding her reflections, Ramsey added, “Our crowd helped us keep the energy flowing and a special shout out to the Bethany College volleyball team for coming and cheering us on! We are also proud of our junior varsity squad tonight as they beat both Hays and Nickerson in three sets each. Overall, it was a very good night on our home court.”

Next up for the Lady Viking spikers will be on Saturday when the go on the road to play at the Southeast of Saline Tournament.
