LINDSBORG – The Smoky Valley cross country team began their 2021 season with a strong showing as they dominated their own invitational last Thursday.
Both the Viking boys and the Lady Vikings took team championships with the Lady Vikings finishing in each of the top six places and scored the minimum of just 15 points while the boys placed in five of the top six and won with 17 points. Other teams competing were Ellinwood, Hesston, Lyons, Hillsboro and Sterling.
“It is always great to start off a new season for no other reason than to be finally getting some competition and see where we are,” pointed out Viking head coach Jay Myers. “My main thing in early meets is we would like to set the tone for the season with our effort and we want to get a time on all of our athletes. After that, we want to compete hard and with some sportsmanship and I have put an additional emphasis on the ‘team’ or ‘family’ concept this year with the high school kids and we saw some things in that department that were good to see.”
Senior Gracie Lambert led the Lady Vikings with a run of 21:11.03 while Keira Mullen took second and Sophia Fruits finished third. Rounding out the top finishers for the Lady Vikings were Kenzie Heline, Lydia Peterson, Olivia Bengtson and Adrian Lochard.
Lambert also took first in the junior/senior division while Mullen finished second in the freshman/sophomore division.
For the Viking boys, Tytus Reed had the top run of the day, running 18:25.00 while Garrett Huffman finished second with a time of 18:25.50 and Samuel Peterson came in third at 18:43.73. Also scoring for Smoky Valley were Justice Gardner who placed fourth, and Britton Becker who landed in sixth.
Like the girls, the Viking boys made it a clean sweep of all gold as Reed also took first in the junior/senior division and Peterson took the gold in the freshman/sophomore division.
In the junior high races, Smoky Valley’s Sophie Eyer won the 7th-grade girls division while Walker Cole took second in the 7th-grade boys division. The Junior Vikings placed third in both the 8th-grade girls division with Gracie Peterson and in the 8th-grade boys division with Parker Gardner.
Coach Myers continued his post meet reflections by saying, “I am always proud of young people when they compete hard and give it a solid effort. I was proud of the performances by all our kids from grade seven to grade 12. Great start to the season full of expectations, and we got off to even a better start at home on a fun course to run. Thanks to the administration for doing all the work as well as all the parents and family who came out in support of the kids today.”
Next up for the Viking harriers will be running in the Hesston Invitational on Thursday.
