DERBY – After being shutout in the first half, the McPherson Middle School 7th grade football team made a valiant attempt to comeback on the road in Derby on Thursday but came up short and lost 46-22.

“Derby gave us some fits defensively and we found ourselves struggling to get their tailback to the ground,” noted 7th grade Junior Pup head coach Heath Gerstner. “I thought offensively we moved the ball up and down the field. After looking at the film a bit, our offensive line did a really nice job handling some guys who were bigger and stronger than we have seen.”

Dane Becker had a huge day for the 7th grade Junior Pups as he scored twice on runs of 56 and 2 yards while Adrian Unruh recovered a Nolan Pearcy fumble in the end zone for the teams third score. The Junior Pups made good on two 2-point conversions with one being a pass from Dane Becker to Bo Barkley.

Coach Gerstner concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Dane (Becker) was a spark at quarterback in the second half and we thought he did a nice job playing both ways while creating some big plays to keep us in the game. I was really impressed with our kid’s effort and not ever giving up.”

Next up for the McPherson 7th-grade Junior Pups will be a home game with Salina South next Thursday.
