HESSTON – Due to illness, the Canton/Galva cross country team was down to just two runners to race at the popular Hesston Invitational on Thursday, but they made the most of it as Christian Darrah placed 3rd overall and 2nd in his class division.

Not running due to illness was the Eagles all-state runner Morgan Becker, but Darrah carried the torch well by running an 18:44 race to place third behind Dylan Sprecker of Southeast of Saline and William Griffith of Salina Central. In the senior boys division, Darrah finished second to Sprecker who ran a 17:13 race.

“We only had two runners compete for us today as the sickness bug has our other two runners sidelines for the moment,” explained Eagle head coach Lyle Silsby in his post meet reflections. “Christian (Darrah) ran a great race today on a spongy, slow course. At the one-mile mark he was fourth, but by the two-mile mark he, Dylan Sprecker of SE of Saline, and William Griffith of Salina Central had separated from the rest of the pack. Though the times were slow, it was fun race to watch, and Christian showed a lot of toughness today.”

The only other Eagle running was freshman Garrett Silsby and he place 40th in his freshman class division with a time of 24:53.

Coach Silsby concluded his reflections by noting, “Garrett (Silsby) ran a really good race, and looked much better than his first race of the 2021 season.”

Next up for the Canton/Galva Eagle harriers will be next Thursday, September 16 when they run at Herington.
