LITTLE RIVER – It was not the prettiest game they ever played, and they had to overcome several self-inflicted mistakes, but the Little River football team continued their drive to defend their state title by pulling out a 14-6 victory at home Friday in a slugfest with a tough team from Clifton/Clyde.
In one of the lower scored games in a while, the Redskins scored first on a 20-yard scamper into the end zone by Rylan Konen in the first quarter, which after converting the two-point conversion, gave them an early 8-0 advantage.
Clifton/Clyde put together a short drive in the second quarter that resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run. After Clifton/Clyde missed the extra point conversion attempt, Little River went into the halftime break holding a slim 8-6 lead.
Braden Young broke away from the crowd to score a Little River touchdown from 40 yards out in the third quarter after which the Redskins held on to earn the hard fought 14-6 victory.
Little River spent game having to overcome self-inflicted errors such as a pair of pass interceptions and eight penalties that cost the team 108 yards.
Despite the errors, the Redskins still managed to total 257 yards on 56 offensive plays, including 233 on the ground led by Braxton Lafferty who rushed for 106 yards on 17 carries.
Defensively, Little River held Clifton/Clyde to just 116 yards on 57 offensive plays which included just 48 yards on 19 carries. Kaden Schafer led the defense with nine tackles while Grant Stephens recorded seven and Lafferty had six.
Now 2-0 for the season, Little River will go on the road next Friday to play Goessel who is now 1-1 after thrashing Herington 46-0.
