HAVEN – After a pair of 3-6 seasons the Smoky Valley football team could be turning it around as they recorded their second win of the season on Friday by going on the road and out running Haven 20-8.

After getting a two-headed running attack going in week one with Kade Blanchat and Trystan Stambaugh rambling for 228 yards on 34 carries, against Haven the Vikings let loose junior Justice Autry as he ripped the Haven defense for 158 yards on 23 carries to lead the Viking offense.

Autry averaged nearly seven yards a tote, an average that was helped by two scoring runs of 10 and 50 yards. Stambaugh had his second strong running game of the season by picking up 72 yards as well.

Besides the two scoring runs by Autry, Smoky Valley’s first score of the game came on a 28 yard pass play from Kason Pihl to Haven Lysell-Stewart.

Overall, the Viking offense recorded 16 first downs while picking up 362 yards on 64 plays, which helped make up for their two turnovers, one on a fumble and one on an interception.

Lysell-Stewart was Pihl key receiver for the game as he caught four passes for 69 yards.

Defensively, the Vikings held Haven to just seven first downs and only 201 yards of offense on 58 plays, or just 3.5 yards per play, including just 2.7 yards per rushing attempt.

Lysell-Stewart was the ringleader of the Viking defense as he recorded nine tackles, while Nolan Dauer recorded five, Gus Griffith had four-and-a-half and both Stambaugh and Ethan Able each put four in the books.

Now 2-0 on the young season, the Vikings will look to continue their winning streak next Friday when they are back at home to host Hillsboro who will also be 2-0 for the season with wins over Nickerson and Hesston.
