The McPherson Middle School 8th grade volleyball team finished 4-1 over three days last week with a Thursday win over Goddard Eisenhower and then taking two of three for wins at a quad in Concordia on Saturday.

Next up for the 8th grade Junior Lady Pup spikers will be a road trip to Salina on Tuesday for a match with Salina South.

On Thursday, the 8th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team won in straight sets (25-13, 28-26) over Goddard Eisenhower.

Brooke Doile, Peyton Bonham, and Ava Romero were noted by the coaches as all having some amazing serving streaks along with several outstanding digs.

“Tonight was a much better showing for our girls as we worked out some kinks from our first matches and all around looked much better on the court,” explained head coach Abby Bradstreet. “Our communication was excellent and ultimately is what helped us win our second set against Goddard Eisenhower. It is fun to watch them come together as a team and start to see things click for them as they learn to play together. We definitely have some things to work on and I cannot wait to watch them improve throughout the upcoming matches.”

On Saturday the ‘A’ team took to the road for a quad in Concordia with Concordia, Hays, and Newton.

In the first match, the Junior Lady Pups lost for the first time this season but it took Hays three sets to beat them 21-25, 25-20, 5-15.

After that they righted the ship and swept both Newton (25-18, 25-15) and Concordia (25-18, 25-18) in straight sets.

The 8th grade ‘A’ team is now 5-1 for the season.

Both Ava Romero and Brooke Doile were noted for some amazing kills during the three matches.

Coach Bradstreet had plenty of reflections on the Saturday quad when she said, “We started out our day pretty rocky against Hays as our communication was off as well as our serve receive. Overall, we just made too many silly mistakes which in the end, got down on ourselves and ended up beating ourselves. We gave up more points than we lost, but were able to come back and defeat both Newton and Concordia. Our communication was much better as well as our serving. We still need to work on our serve receive, but it was a fun day of volleyball. I am excited to see where the rest of our season takes us.”

On Thursday, the Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team scored another straight set victory by beating Goddard Eisenhower 25-20, 25-20 to keep them unbeaten in the early season at 3-0.

Among those pinned for their serving streaks were Jasmyn Evans, Leah Cahonne, and Kaylee Western.

‘B’ team coach Chelsey McCasland had plenty of good comments in her post-match reflections when she stated, “Another win in the books and I could definitely tell that our athletes were more comfortable in their rotation and roles after playing last week. Individually, we all had some strong moments and are working towards really putting them together as a team. After watching our girls play tonight, I noticed that we need to learn to create our own energy on the court. When we have energy, we gain momentum, and when we have momentum, we score multiple points in a row. Ultimately, this energy shift in the second set allowed us to pull ahead at the end. I was also proud of how our setters’ confidence and talk improved a lot from our first matches. We have a busy week of volleyball ahead.”
