The Little River volleyball team went on the road on Saturday to play in the Centra Volleyball Tournament and came home with a Tournament Championship along with four wins and one loss.

In their first match of the day, the Lady Redskins breezed past Wichita Homeschool (25-13, 25-16) in straight sets before getting past a tough Berean Academy team in the second match 26-24, 25-17, winning in straight sets again.

Little River made it their third straight two-set win in match three when they took down Wichita Classical 25-23, 25-11.

Against Marion, the Lady Redskins won the first set 25-22, before losing two straight close sets 20-25, 13-25.

After hammering Centre in the final match of the day (25-11, 25-10), Little River was declared the tournament champion based on set wins due to a three way tie with the Lady Redskins, Marion and Berean Academy.

“It was a hot day as Centre’s gyms are not air conditioned and it was another steamy September day,” explained Lady Redskin head coach Kim Rolfs. “Despite the heat we came away with the first-place trophy. Looking back, our tough finishes against Berean Academy, Wichita Classical and winning the first set against Marion proved to clinch our first place finish. When there is a three-way tie they then go to set wins and with Marion losing to Berean Academy in two-sets, we earned the trophy with our one set win over Marion.”

Lily Boughfman was the team leader for the day as she recorded 44 kills while making seven ace serves. Other team leaders on the stat sheet were Kate Ellwood with 65 set assists, Elsie Boughfman with 22 kills and Aubrey Olander making nine blocks.

Coach Rolfs continued her post-tournament reflections by adding, “I would really like to play Marion again as they were our third match in a row and you could tell by our energy level in the third set. We got down a bunch in the second set early and fought tremendously hard to get back in the game. I think that gook a toll on our energy levels.”

She concluded her reflections by saying, “We are super proud of the girls in their fight all day long. Several girls made some huge plays when needed and I can’t complain of the leadership on the floor. I may sound like a broken record, but we are growing each time we step on the floor. I am certain we have not met our ceiling which is exciting to think about.”

The Lady Redskins are back in action on Tuesday with a quad involving Canton/Galva, Elyria Christian, and Goessel.
