HERINGTON – Once again the short in numbers Canton/Galva cross country team made a huge impact on the Thursday at Herington as Morgan Becker and Christian Darrah finished second and third.

Becker, coming back from time missed due to illness, ran a sharp 17:17 to place second while fellow Eagle, Darrah, was right behind him in third after running a 17:23.

“Morgan (Becker) and Christian (Darrah) both ran strong races today at the Herington Cross Country Meet,” noted Eagle head coach Lyle Silsby. “The two led the race most of the way until about a half mile to go when Brady Wells of Salina Sacred Heart was able to catch them and go on to win the race. Morgan has battled illness the past few weeks and we weren’t sure how he would run, but his will and desire pushes him and he finished well. Christian ran the best time of his high school career, it is great to see him getting better every day while having fun doing it.”

In the boys junior varsity race, the Eagles Garrett Silsby place 10th with a run of 24:10 while Ethan Alkire placed 19th after running a 27:40. The lone other Canton/Galva runner was Cane Krase who placed 8th in the seventh-grade boys two-mile run with a time of 19:32.

Coach Silsby concluded his post-meet reflections by saying, “Garrett (Silsby) ran his best race of the season today and was able to pass three runners in the last half mile while holding off a hard charging runner from Little River at the finish line. This was Ethan’s (Alkire) first race ever today as he has been sidelined with illnesses the first few weeks of the season.”

Next up for the Canton/Galva Eagle harriers will be a meet with Marion next Thursday, September 23.
