CANTON – Despite playing without their starting quarterback and two other starters, the Canton/Galva football team still managed to lockdown and shutout visiting Washington County, 50-0, at home on Friday evening.
According to Eagle head coach Shelby Hoppes, starting quarterback Garrett Maltbie was injured early in last week’s game at Solomon yet finished out the game with what now appears to be an ankle injury.
“We will be without Garrett (Maltbie) for at least a couple of weeks, maybe longer depending on what checks out this week,” noted Coach Hoppes. “But Jayden Ediger, just a sophomore, stepped up and had an outstanding game.”
And yes, he did, as all that Ediger did was complete five-of-ten passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns while running for another score in the first start of his varsity career.
Canton/Galva got on the board three times in the first quarter, twice on scoring runs of three and 21 yards by all-stater Tyson Struber, while Ediger connected with TJ Koehn for a 25-yard pass for the final score of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Ediger connected for a pair of touchdown passes with one going to Cason Mastre covering 65 yards while Struber took a pass in from 42 yards out. Ediger completed the first half scoring with a 29-yard run giving the Eagles a commanding 44-0 lead at the halftime break.
Ryder Norstrom completed the teams scoring in the third quarter when he rambled in from 17 yards out.
Hoppes acknowledged some pride in how the team did with adversity when he completed some post-game reflections by saying, “We started like four or five sophomores tonight due to injuries to Garrett (Maltbie), senior center Brayden Doughman who is out for a four-to-six weeks and Nick Evans who is out with a broken collarbone. Besides Jayden, I was pleased with how well Wyatt Collins and Lane McMannis stepped up as well.”
Ryder Norstrom led the Eagles on the ground with 47 yards while Struber gained 43 as the team averaged 7.8 yards every time they ran the ball.
Defensively, Canton/Galva locked down Washington County, holding them to just 48 yards of total offense on 33 plays including just 1.3 yards per 28 rushing attempts. The defense was led by Struber and TJ Koehn who each had 9.5 tackles while Koehn, Struber and Xavier Westbrook combined for seven tackles resulting in a loss of yardage.
Now 3-0 on the season, the Eagles will go on the road next Friday to Bennington before their big matchup on Friday, October 1 with Little River.
