LINDSBORG – It continues to be a turn around season for the Smoky Valley football team as they equaled their entire 2020 season win total on Friday night by remaining unbeaten at 3-0 as they outdueled Hillsboro 14-8 on their home field in Lindsborg.

The Vikings won just three games a year ago while this season they are now unbeaten at 3-0 in what appears to be a major turn around season.

In a slugfest type of game, both teams put one score on the board in the first quarter as the Vikings put six up when Justice Autry broke loose for a 53-yard run to the end zone. Unfortunately Smoky Valley missed the two-point conversion and after Hillsboro scored, the Vikings found themselves trailing 8-6 heading into the second quarter.

Trystan Stambaugh capped off a strong offensive drive by the Vikings with a one-yard run in the second quarter and after Autry plunged in for the two-point conversion, Smoky Valley took the lead back 14-8 and held on to it until the final gun for the victory.

The Smoky Valley defense held on when necessary and despite giving up 286 yards to the very balanced offense, they had 122 yards passing and 164 rushing, of Hillsboro, they stopped them when needed to gain the victory. Haven Lysell-Stewart led the Viking defense by recording 10.5 tackles while the team totaled three quarterback sacks and five times stopped Hillsboro for a loss of yardage.

On offense, Karson Pihl only threw the ball six times, completing three for just 41 yards as the Vikings relied on the run game where they rolled up 273 yards on 54 carries.

Only three Vikings carried the ball in the game with Justice Autry leading the team with 136 yards on 18 carries while Trystan Stambaugh ran for 78 on 23 carries and Kade Blanchat toted the ball 13 times for 69 yards.

The Vikings will try to continue their unbeaten streak alive next Friday when they go on the road to Colby who will come into the game 1-2 for the season after losing to Ulysses 28-22 on Friday.
