After taking a 22-0 lead into the halftime break, the McPherson Middle School 7th grade football team cruised on in for a final 28-8 victory over Salina South on Thursday.

Dane Becker ran into the end zone to score twice in the first quarter for the 7th grade Junior Pups, and when you added in a Carter Bengtson to Cole Cooper 2-point Conversion, McPherson took an early 14-0 lead.

Bengtson connected with Bo Barkley for another touchdown in the second quarter and with Becker throwing a pass to Ashton Malm for the 2-point conversion, the Junior Pups had their 22-0 halftime advantage.

The Junior Pups added one more score in the third quarter on a run by Becker.

“I was really proud of these 7th-grade Junior Pups tonight,” noted head coach Heath Gerstner. “They played with another gear and our aggressiveness bothered Salina South all night.”

Coach Gerstner gave praises to his offensive line when he added, “Our offensive line is going to be really good down the road. Owen Smith, Asher Allen, Ethan Robinson, Dylan Hall, Izyck Puhalla and Taylor Johnson were a force. They are physical and most importantly learning their assignments.”

Concluding his reflections on the game, Coach Gerstner said, “I don’t believe our defense even allowed a first down in the first half. We are staying more disciplined and reading our keys which allows our kids to play fast. As a coach, it does not get any better than winning and see every player on the team get in on the action. We had roughly 35 guys on the roster and everyone got some playing time.”

Next up for the 7th-grade Junior Pups will be on Thursday, September 23 when they tangle with Andover.
