The McPherson Middle School 8th grade football team played a solid game all-around last Thursday as they not only handled Salina South, they shut them out, winning 28-0.
Keaton Crane scored twice on two and five-yard runs wile Julian Glover had a 15-yard scoring scamper and Cooper Reeves added a 15-yard run to top the Junior Pup scoring. Glover and Kaizer Kanitz each added a 2-point conversion runs as well.
“I was very proud of our effort against Salina South,” pointed out 8th grade Junior Pup head coach Brandt Busse in his post-game reflections. “The offensive line came out and really controlled the line of scrimmage from the start. As a coaching staff, we love to see a well-balanced attack through the air and on the ground. We will look to continue to get better.”
Kanitz and Reeves lead the Junior Pups in rushing with Kanitz gaining 65 yards on four carries while Reeves ran for 60 yards on eight totes. Glover covered 32 yards on four carries and Crane ran for 11 on three.
Kanitz threw for 93 yards while completing four-of-six passes and Cowen Huggard threw for 15 yards on his lone completion and pass of the game.
Leading the Junior Pups in receiving was Cade Strathman who had two receptions for 38 yards, while Reeves covered 21 yards on his lone catch of the game, with Jett Pyle and Paxton Ingels each catching a pass for 33 and 15 yards respectively. Pyle also returned a punt for 21 yards.
On the defensive side, the 8th grade Junior Pups were lead by Julian Glover with three tackles and one quarterback sack, while Cowen Huggard, Cade Strathman, and Caden Wenderott each recorded a quarterback sack as well. Both Cody Lackey and Cooper Reeves recorded four tackles while Jayden Montenegro had three.
Next up for the McPherson Middle School 8th Grade Junior Pups will be a battle with Andover on Thursday, September 23.
