INMAN – From the opening moment of the game and beyond the one-and-a-half-hour rain delay on Friday night, the Inman football team dazzled the home crowd as they had total command when on offense and totally dismantled visiting Salina Sacred Heart with their defense in an 86-0 victory.
“I thought we looked as good tonight as we ever have,” explained Teuton head coach Lance Sawyer. “I thought Sacred heart came out with some fire, but we were able to put it on them early and not let up.
The Teutons scored six times in the first quarter with Kendyn Blank getting three on runs of 20 and 35 yards plus a punt return to the house of 38 yards. Tanner Heckel and Kyler Konrade both caught scoring passes from Inman quarterback Jace Doerksen and the Teutons converted all six of their two-point conversions to take an early 48-0 lead.
By the time the two teams reached the halftime break, Inman held a whopping 72-0 advantage as Blank ran for two more scores in the second quarter while Doerksen connecting with Heckel for his third scoring pass of the evening.
Talon Welch and Kellen Schrag both got into the scoring column with touchdown runs in the third quarter to give the Teutons the final 86-0 dismantling win over Sacred Heart.
For the game, Inman rolled up 380 yards of total offense on just 26 offensive plays lead by Doerksen who completed eight-of-nine passes for 150 yards and four scores, and Kendyn Blank who rambled for 122 yards on just five carries. Tanner Heckel caught four of the passes for 112 yards and three of the touchdowns.
Coach Sawyer talked about the success of the offense during his post-game reflections when he said, “Our goal on offense was to come out and establish our passing game, and Jace (Doerksen) was on fire. Tanner (Heckel) made some great runs after a catch while Kendyn (Blank) had another solid game running the ball. Our offensive line is in midseason form.”
As good as the offense was, the Teuton defense was even better as they held Sacred Heart to a total of minu-13 yards in total offense on 41 plays, including zero yards passing. A total of 21 Teutons recorded at least one tackle in the stat sheets for the game.
“Our defense played so well and so physical,” pointed out Coach Sawyer. “Kyler (Konrade), and Sammy (Shober) played well at the linebacker spots while Dawson Mannebach, Grant Thimmesch, and Dominic Nuese-Rasmussen owned the line of scrimmage.”
The Teutons continue to put up some staggering numbers in the first three weeks of the season as now they have shutout all three of their opponents, outscoring everyone by 206-0 through three weeks.
Kendyn Blank has carried the ball just 15 times in three games for 344 yards and 10 touchdowns, that’s an average of 22.9 yards every time he carries the ball.
And directing the Teuton offense, Jace Doerksen as been spectacular as he has but two incompletions in three games, throwing 14-of-16 for 356 yards and seven touchdowns without a single interception.
Coach Sawyer concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Tonight we set the school record for points in a game with 86 and while the starters have pretty much only played the first half of each of the first three games, they are outscoring their opponents in the first and second quarters, 186-0.”
Now 3-0 on the season, the Teutons will go on the road next Friday, September 24 when they head west to Oakley.
