HOISINGTON – The Smoky Valley volleyball team traveled to Hoisington on Tuesday and split a pair of matches with Hoisington and Clay Center.

In their opening match, the Lady Vikings were paired with Clay Center, a team that is ranked in Class 4A. Smoky Valley gave the Tigers everything they had in the first match before losing 24-26 and then lost the second set 17-25. It was just the third loss of the season for the Lady Vikings.

“Our varsity squad came out a little flat in the Clay Center match,” explained Lady Viking head coach Sharlene Ramsey. “We were slow getting to the ball and Clay Center took advantage of that. The biggest lead in the first set by either squad was just four points so it was a real battle for each point. We were tied at 22-22 and I though we would finish on top, but we struggled to work around their block and play aggressive defense.”

In the second match with Hoisington, the Lady Vikings were tested to the limit but managed to win the match in straight sets 25-22, 25-22.

Coach Ramsey was pleased with the Lady Vikings response after their loss to Clay Center, saying, “I was very proud of the girls for bouncing back in the Hoisington game and finishing the victory in two sets, especially since the Hoisington game was a league game.”

Some of the Lady Viking leaders for the two matches included Adrian Hazelwood who scored a whopping 38 assists while hitting 14/15 on serves, Madi Tolle who nailed 15/16 on serves with three aces while making 10 digs and recording 11 kills. Other high marks in the stat sheet came from Hope Duncan for hitting 14/15 on serves with a pair of aces while also recording 17 kills and making 28 digs.

Both the Lady Viking #1 and #2 junior varsity squads split their matches with each beating Clay Center while losing to Hoisington.

The #1 junior varsity team plays in Minneapolis on Saturday before the Lady Viking varsity and both junior varsity teams tangle on the road at Larned next Tuesday, September 28.
