MARION – With their varsity runners not running, the Canton/Galva cross country team still had three runners participate on Thursday at the Marion Cross Country Invitational.

Neither all-state Eagle runners Morgan Becker nor Christian Darrah ran in the meet due to their prepping for Saturday’s huge meet in Lawrence at the Rimrock Cross Country Classic.

Both Garrett Silsby and Ethan Alkire ran for the Eagles in the Junior Varsity 5K race with Silsby finishing 5th after running a 21:53 race and Alkire placing 29th with a run of 26:06.

In the junior high 7th-grade 1-mile race, Cane Krase ran for Canton/Galva and placed 20th with a run of 9:12.

“All three of our boys ran their best times of the season,” noted Eagle head coach Lyle Silsby. “Garrett (Silsby) ran over two minutes faster than his previous best while Ethan (Alkire) had a time that was a minute and 30 seconds faster. Even Cane (Krase) ran 19-seconds faster that his previous best time.”

Coach Silsby concluded his reflections by adding, “They obviously are getting into better shape, but yesterday was the coolest day we have raced yet, and I think that was a contributing factor. We have been training in the heat of the day since the first day of practice, and finally had a decent day with low humidity to run felt pretty good to them.”

The Eagle harriers will be back on the racecourse next Thursday when they travel to Berean Academy.
