MOUNDRIDGE – It was a true slugfest on Thursday for the Moundridge football team as they hosted Medicine Lodge and between the two team rolled up 686 yards in offense and scored 64 points with the visitors scoring last and winning 34-30 in the final two minutes of the game.
The Wildcats got the first score of the game on a 48-yard run by Logan Churchill to take the early 6-0 lead.
Both teams scored twice in the second quarter with Moundridge finding the end zone on a one-yard run by quarterback Henry Hecox before he connected with Kase Ptacek on an 11-yard passing score. Medicine Lodge scored on a one-yard run and a 65-yard pass play, plus converted one of their two attempted two-point conversions. This left the Wildcats holding a slim 18-14 halftime advantage.
The Wildcats moved their lead out to 24-14 early in the third quarter on another one-yard fall into the end zone by Hecox before Medicine Lodge pulled to back within four at 24-20 with a 55-yard kickoff return.
Moundridge moved the lead out to 30-20 on a 24-yard touchdown scamper from Kase Ptacek in the fourth quarter before Medicine Lodge scored twice, once on a 15-yard run and the other on a one-yard plunge with just a minute and 20 seconds left to play. This gave the visitors their final 34-30 win.
Medicine Lodge tapped the Wildcat defense for 347 yards in a very balanced offensive attack as they ran for 179 yards while passing for another 168.
The Wildcats ran for 298 yards on the ground while Hecox completed just six passes for 41 yards. Kase Ptacek had a monster game at running back, covering 219 yards on 30 carries for an average of 7.3 yards every time he took the ball.
Barrett Moddelmog led the Wildcat defense with nine total tackles of which five were solo stops while Joaquin Huff had a big game on the defensive side with eight total tackles of which seven were solo while getting a quarterback sack and twice taking down visiting ball carriers for a loss of yardage. Kase Ptacek and Anthony Everhart each recorded six tackles.
Up next for the Wildcats, now 1-3 for the season, will be homecoming on Friday, October 1 when they host Goessel.
